Being Thankful

November 4, 2015

I thought I'd write this blog about Thanksgiving given its November. It's never been my favorite holiday because in all honesty I'm a really picky eater, and the food isn't my favorite. But I've realized as I've gotten older that it's one of the most important holidays. Not just because of the food or the history of the day, but because we so often forget to be thankful for the things that we have.

My family has never done the thing where we go around the table and name something we're thankful for. But I think if we did, everything would be very general. We'd say how we're grateful for our family, and for the food on our table. But I think it's important to think about those things you don't usually think about. Of course, I'm grateful for my family, and of course I'm grateful for the food they're all about to enjoy.

But, I'm also thankful that I have two sisters who can always make me laugh, even when I don't feel like laughing. I'm grateful that I have two parents who just want me to be happy, and an extended family that I've learned in the past couple years, can get through anything if we stick together. I'm thankful for rainy days because they always make me happy. I'm grateful I got the opportunity to write these blogs because it's pushed me way out of my comfort zone, and it's helped me realize that the best things usually happen when you're way outside of your comfort zone.

I've realized that it's really important to take some time and think about the details. Those little parts in life that have become so normal to you, you don't always recognize how great they are. So, whether you do it this Thanksgiving, or this month, or just a random Tuesday, try to think about the little things. The things you maybe take for granted or even the things that are so small you've never taken the time to really think about. Realize just how great all these little things are, and that even when life gets tough or sad or awful, you always have those little things that can make you smile. Be thankful for that.
